Upcoming August Shipmate

Here is the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter column in the upcoming August Shipmate

Your San Francisco Bay Area Alumni Association is still here and we have a few announcements!

I would like to give a tremendous Bravo Zulu to Liam Lane ’02 for his service to the Chapter over the past few years. Thank you for your leadership as President and we wish you all the best in your adventures with your family in the future. We will give you a proper farewell when we can gather again!

It is my honor to accept the position as your new chapter President! For those of you that I have not met yet, I look forward to getting to know you.

Lauren Cosgrave

If we have not met I am Lauren Cosgrave ’04. I served for 11 years as a SWO aboard USS RUSSELL, USS GETTYSBURG and USS CHOSIN. After leaving the Navy in 2015 my husband Sean and I moved from Hawaii to the Bay Area which is Sean’s hometownarea. We live in Marin with our 2 daughters Nora (4) and Claire (2). After a few years working in tech at Facebook and Dropbox, I am currently a Certified High Performance Coach and love my new found career of service. I am very excited to be a part of this organization and to help the group continue to grow as a resource for USNA Alumni.

In the coming months, expect more communication, a renewed virtual events calendar, and a call for board member volunteers!

Our Core Values

From the Desk of ADM Samuel J. Locklear III ’77, USN (Ret.), Chairman of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association Board of Trustees:

Today I was made aware of statements posted to a public forum attributed to an alumni volunteer of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association Board of Trustees representing the Jacksonville, FL, chapter. These attributed statements do not represent the mission and values of the Alumni Association, the Naval Academy or the U.S. Navy.

As volunteer leaders in our communities, we must be inspirations and examples for all citizens. As Chairman of our Alumni Association, I have accepted the resignation of this alumnus effective today, and asked the Jacksonville, FL, chapter to take appropriate action to appoint a new Chapter Trustee.

The Naval Academy Alumni Association represents more than 65,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We support the Naval Academy mission. As alumni, we seek to uphold the Naval Academy core leadership values of honor, courage and commitment. As an alumni organization, we seek to be an inspiration for all young people who want to become future Navy and Marine Corps officers. We will continue to honor that inspirational role. We are all in this together. We must face the challenges of today and all future challenges of tomorrow…together.

The words spoken by the Jacksonville Trustee were painful words and shocking to hear they come from a fellow alumni and volunteer leader within our ranks. I encourage you all to look into it fully to better understand what has happened, but know that our Chapter is aligned with the these statements made by Admiral Locklear.

Chapter Reboot 2020

It’s time for the SF Bay Area Chapter (the original West Coast Chapter) to pass the leadership baton onto a new generation of Chapter Leadership.  The current Board is now undergoing a re-write of our Chapter Bylaws to take us into the next decade.

We know that many of our alumni living in the SF Ba Area are eager to get more involved in our alumni association.  If you are not in a carer position that you have an opportunity to give back to your academy, please contact us and let us know your interest.
